NOVEMBER 2023

Message From our President

Dear Aeros:

For those of you, like me, who have lost loved ones in WWI, WWII, the Korean Conflict or Vietnam, let's take a moment of silence on November 11 to remember their ultimate sacrifice. Times are turbulent again.  We must never forget.

In these turbulent times, travel once again is challenging. Westjet just issued a warning to their pilots scheduled in and out of SFO to not leave the airport vicinity during layovers.  US carriers are warning travellers to be extra vigilant in crowded public spaces such as airports and aboard flights.  Two friends last week were stranded, one in Cypress and one in Paris, when their commercial flights were cancelled without notice due to the Middle East conflict.

Despite these challenges, business must go on. Face-to-face meetings are more important than ever before. Zoom just doesn't cut it for deal making. October reinforced this fact for me:

October 3rd - YVR to TUL--Lunch with the President of Jet Logistics and a demonstration of our brand new technology that tracks and budgets scheduled maintenance events a year in advance.

October 3rd - TUL to BNA--Dinner with Genex's Director of Business Development in preparation for a three-day NAFA conference in Nashville.  As new NAFA members we met with 50 IMOs and entered MOUs with two to distribute our product to an additional 800 agents, nationwide.

October 6th - TUL to CUL --Lunch with owner of a Genex competitor where, after protracted negotiations, we inked a long-term strategic partnership, converting competitors into friends.

October 6th - CUL to FTW--Dinner with Genex's Texas legal team to celebrate a significant recent final court victory for Genex.

October 7th - FTW to OKC--Lunch with newly appointed local counsel to welcome them onboard.

October 8th - OKC to SDL--Breakfast with Arizona counsel to strategize on an ongoing complex matter....and back home again.   Below are a few reels from the trip.

Bottom line, Genex's gain from this trip is estimated to be $5 million over three years. That is more than triple what I paid for my jet in 2020 plus combined operating costs for three years.  In one trip alone!  The cities we needed to visit would have incurred 10 days of commercial travel time, assuming no flight delays. Thanks to Jet Logistics, our trip ran flawlessly, both in the air and on the ground.  And the team remained healthy throughout.

This is why I say owning a jet is not a luxury. It is an absolute necessity for business people like us.

Happy Flying

Happy 60th Anniversary, Learjet
image.jpeg
October 7 marked the 60th Anniversary of the inaugural flight of the most significant, most iconic and most decorated private jet name of all time. Above is a picture of the Lear 23, which started it all.  The name "Learjet" has become synonymous with "private jet".

Since 1963, a total of 3043 Learjets across 6 model classes have been built. An astonishing 70 percent continue to fly to this day, including dozens in military fleets of the US, Australia and Switzerland.  Think about that.   More Learjets have been built than all Gulfstreams and Global Expresses combined and almost as many as the combined fleet of 747s, 757s, and 767s (~3,500). That is why it is far easier to get parts for a Learjet 35 than it is for current production Cessna Citation CJ3s and Phenom 300s.

Some Learjet highlights over the years:
  • Learjet 23 was the first aircraft ever to be designed and built as a purely private jet.
  • Owned by some of the biggest celebrities of the day, Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Marlon Brando, Dean Martin and Arnold Palmer, to name a few.
  • In 1976 Arnold Palmer flew his Learjet 36 to establish a new round-the-world class record of 22,894 miles, completing the mission in 57 hours and 42 minutes
  • February 14, 1996 a Learjet 35A broke Palmer's speed record for corporate jets, covering the 23,500 mile flight in 49 hours, 21 minutes, 42 seconds.  The record would stand for over 20 years until 2018.
  • To the present day the Learjet 35A holds the record for #1 in range and #3 in speed for its category, making it stand out in a sea of new entrants that cost much more.
With over 2,300 Learjets still flying today, the brand will be around for decades to come.

Preowned Aircraft Market Mini Update

Prices and availability of pre-owned aircraft on the market today reflect an impending economic downturn.

Light jets - Prices remain elevated and firm.  Demand still outweighs supply.

Medium jets - Balanced market, prices remain firm, but supply growing.

Heavy jets - Soft market, buyer's market.   Supply high and not much is selling.

We are currently tracking 18 Global Expresses for sale, 5 off market but available.

If you are considering buying within the next 12 to 15 months, I would highly recommend you start looking now but do not commit to anything yet.  We are here to help you with this important decision. In my experience waiting til the market has bottomed is not prudent either.  I bought mine in March, 2020 at the start of the pandemic. By the end of the pandemic my aircraft had appreciated 40 percent in value.  It is now 2x.

Also as a reminder, if you earn your money in the US, buying before December 31, 2023 but structuring correctly can make for a good tax plan.

A more extensive Market Update is planned for January's Newsletter.

So call us and let us know your thoughts.
